organic silk cotton gauze scarf in caramel

$140.00

Our lightweight organic silk cotton scarf has a soft and silky feel with a lovely drape. It has been cut with an oversized length and left with raw edges for a natural finish. Each piece has been dyed by hand using plant-based dyes. No optical brighteners or sizing chemicals have been used in processing the fabric.

Please note that colors are approximate and may show up slightly different on your computer screen. In time the color will soften and patina, as this is inherent to textiles dyed with plants. Low-water immersion (or kettle) dyeing in small batches can give some of the scarves a rich and slightly mottled appearance. Variation in dye color is an attribute to the natural dyeing and handmade process. Do not store in direct sunlight, as natural color loss will occur.

In an effort to reduce waste, we use the full width of the fabric. Some scarves may have a classic selvedge edge detail.

Zero waste in the garment creation process.

dye material: himalayan rhubarb

Himalayan rhubarb dye is obtained from the roots of a mountain rhubarb variety that grows in the Himalayas.

care instructions:

Hand washing plant dyed accessories increases the longevity of the textile by preserving fibers and the color, in a way that washing machines can’t.

Fill a container or sink with lukewarm water. Add a small amount of pH neutral soap, such as Dawn dish soap, Seventh Generation, or The Laundress delicate wash. Mix the water and soap to prepare the bath. Submerge the scarf, using your hands to agitate the water and soap. Soak for up to 30 minutes. Never soak silk scarfs for longer than 30 minutes. Rinse well using lukewarm or cold water until the soapy water is gone and press out the water. Be careful not to wring or twist the fabric.

drying:

Don’t put into the dryer. To dry, as quickly as possible, place the scarf on top of a towel and roll up the scarf in the towel (like a sleeping bag) to remove excess water. For faster drying, use more than one towel and repeat this process several times. Lay flat or hang to air dry. Do not hang dry in direct sunlight.

ironing:

If desired, lightly iron on a silk setting to iron out any wrinkles.
